Feature- SB1070

Feature Assignment
Going to school so close to the Border, you become familiar with stories about things that happen around the border. For example, I constantly run across stories on the internet of their most recent drug bust here on the other side of the border usually in a bordering town of Tucson or Phoenix, Arizona. This is a new experience for me since I did not grow up in Arizona, I am not accustomed to having daily issues regarding gang violence and drug trafficking. Therefore, learning about the effects of SB1070 and how or if it has changed anything with our bordering country of Mexico. With that, I felt that it was necessary to look into the immigration law the State of Arizona passed on April 19, 2010, more than a year after it was passed and how it has affected border patrol. In regards to violence, number of immigrants attempts to cross the border illegally, and whether or not the drug trafficking numbers have dropped with stricter and tighter enforcement going on.
The title of SB1070 is “Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act.” The bill went into effect on July 29, 2010. Before this bill was enacted, law enforcement already had the right to check on the legal status of a person suspected of a crime. Once this bill was passed it made it mandatory for law enforcement to check a person’s legal status. Most people do not realize that before this bill was passed that it was already legal for law enforcement to the check whether a person had legal verification or not. Another part of the bill to take note on is that law enforcement are not required to arrest illegal immigrants. After I read that and understood that this new bill that was being proposed was not creating a new law that could possibly be bordering racial profiling. Nevertheless, this new bill was only strengthening the previous law that was already put into law. With that I found what our President had to say on the issue and his opinion on the matter didn’t surprise me or anyone for that matter. President Obama had this to say about the Senate’s Bill, “it threatens to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and our communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe.”
After reading and learning about SB 1070 it was very easy to realize that this bill is very complicated. One of the main reasons why it is so complicated is because the initial bill proposed by the State of Arizona had gone through so many different judicial courts that by the time they had come to a decision of what should legally and lawfully be on this senate bill that it was completely reevaluated to the liking of the court. This senate bill made it all the way to Supreme Court to get a ruling on what was and wasn’t acceptable in this act because of the controversy surrounding this act that it became too big of an issue for a state judicial system to have final say on this bill.
One area where this law is not having a positive effect is there are still dead bodies showing up all along the border. Last year the number of illegal immigrant’s entering into the United States dropped. However, the number of dead bodies showing up along the border increased by a significant amount.
There are five different sections in this bill. Enforcement of Immigration law, Willful failure to complete or carry an alien registration document, unlawfully picking up passengers for work, unlawful transporting or harboring unlawful aliens, and employer sanctions. A few notable guidelines under these sections; “requires the immigration status to be verified with the federal government for anyone who is arrested.” Along with, “law enforcement cannot consider race, color, or national origin when implementing these provisions, excerpt if it may hinder or obstruct an investigation.” And finally, “requires employers to keep a record of employment verification for the duration of the employee’s employment or three years whichever is longer.” In conclusion, the main guideline that people are taking from this is that law enforcement is required to check the legal status of anyone who is suspected of committing a crime or breaking the law.
The majority of people who are against this act claim that this senate bill breaks the grounds of racial profiling. The most controversial part of the bill states that “enforcement officers are allowed to stop, detain, or arrest a suspect, if the officer can document “reasonable suspicion” of that person being an “illegal alien”.” The objection is that it is not possible to tell who is an illegal immigrant or not, this nothing but blatant racial profiling aimed at Latinos.
My uncle, Ben Russell, has been a border patrol agent for just over two years now and I was able to interview him to find out about his life in Border Patrol. My uncle Ben was a big guy before he started his border patrol training. He says he is now currently in “the best shape of my life” He is more a quiet guy if he does not know you very well. Outside of border patrol Ben enjoys riding motorcycles and hanging out on Lake Havasu where his parents currently reside. However, Ben currently works in Calexico, CA. Calexico is just outside of the Imperial Valley in Southern California.
When I asked him about the process of getting into border patrol, I had no idea the scrutiny you have to deal with because of how long the entire process really is. He starts by saying, “While you’re waiting to find out if they are going to accept your application or not they give you a training guide to start following to make sure you’re in shape if you are accepted into the training process. The training academy takes up to almost two years. Once you complete training you then just kind of wait to get a call to tell you where they are stationing you. They let you fill out a form listing the top three places you would like to be. However, they tend to not station you in those areas until your well on in your border patrol career.”
I know Ben, and Calexico was not one of his “top three” choices but he should be pretty happy because that is quite close to where he grew up in Brawley, CA. He is familiar with that area a fair amount and he isn’t in a place where he doesn’t know anyone. However, I have been down to that area because my mom grew up there as well and there is nothing out there so it’s nothing to be excited about it. Since he has only been working for the border patrol for the past two years he has had the opportunity to see what his job was like before this act was put into place and then a year of working under this bill he has seen the differences between the two years. He believes that the law has been beneficial for everyone, yet he goes on to say “whatever we do they are always going to devise different ways and areas to attempt coming across the border.”
I haven’t had the opportunity to see my Uncle Ben more than once since he joined Border Patrol a couple years ago, so having the opportunity to talk to him I wanted to find out about the day in a life of a Border Patrol agent. The main duty as a Border Patrol agent is to line watch. Line watching involves detecting undocumented aliens and their smugglers by maintaining surveillance from a covert position. They must pursue leads; respond when their sensor alarms are triggered. Something I found interesting was how they do line watching at night. According to my Uncle, “line watching at night is my favorite because you get to use the infrared binoculars to scope the vicinity for aliens attempting to make it across the border.” He went on to say it is more exciting because majority of smugglers are attempting to try and cross the border during the night. Therefore, majority of the action the Border Patrol deals with is coming after the sun goes down.
I could not imagine actually being a Border Patrol agent, the stories that you hear on television about immigrants trying to come across the border so they can try and start a new life here in the United States and what they will attempt to make sure they have the opportunity to make it across the border. It is jaw dropping. When talking to my Uncle I asked him whether he had any interesting stories about immigrants trying to get across the border. He laughed at me and said “I have more stories in two years than you could imagine.” It seems that it is very popular for pregnant women to cross the border illegally while they are in the final stages of pregnancy because by law, the Border Patrol must call for an ambulance to take this woman to the hospital so she can have her baby. They do this because they are taken to a hospital inside the United States making there just born child a United States citizen. I personally could never imagine experiencing something of that nature. Having to try and help a woman who is in the middle of giving labor while having to detain her. Plus make sure she is safe and well at the same time so nothing harmful happens to the baby. I would imagine that most woman speak little too no English. Adding that on top of everything else seems like an environment you must be mentally prepared for. However, something I noted, when he was talking to me about this he tells the story to me like it was just another day on the job because he has seen it happen so many times.

Sandusky, could you look any worse?

Jerry Sandusky , the former Penn State defensive coordinator who now is being accused of being a pedophile and has 40 different charges against him for many sexual acts with boys of ages 7-14. Last night, Sandusky went on air to have a telephone interview with Bob Costas with hopes to help his case that he is innocent. I believe it is safe to say that Sandusky made himself look no better and a lot worse than before this interview. The man claims to have showered with them and only "touching there legs" and "horsing around" in the shower. Which makes me wonder how can he believe that he did nothing wrong with these young boys if he was naked horsing around with 10 year olds in the shower!? An assistant coach claims to have witnessed him raping another child. The fact that this coach did nothing about it is a completely different story. One more note on the interview, one of the last questions Costas asked him was whether or not he was sexually attracted to young boys, Sandusky paused for a second then reiterated the question, paused again then says "no I am not sexually attracted to them. I love children." To me this man couldnt seem any more guilty but that will be resolved in court. This story has the feeling that more and more is going to keep coming out on this story only making it worse. The process is just getting started.ESPN link

In class Workshop

In class last week we split into groups and interviewed each other trying to get a better understanding on how to conduct an interview. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to interview Mayra Feliciano. We touched on a lot of basic topics such as her hobbies, what she wants to gain out this class. But the one question that really got our interview going was when I asked her what she likes to do outside of school. Mayra has a strong passion for civil rights. She puts together weekly open meetings throughout Tucson. In these meetings topics discussed are discussed as an open forums. I was impressed with how much knowledge she has and all the steps she has taken on her own to be at this point. After school, Mayra hopes to go into civil rights field and wants to defend and protect those that need the help. I very much enjoyed my interview with Mayra.

Will we have an NBA Season?

According to the owners, the NBA players association has one day left to accept the owners offer of a 50-50 split on revenue. However, the players must decide whether or not they believe the owners will not accept any offer better than 50-50 for the players after wednesday. My thoughts on the situation is that the owners are lying and that they would accept a different offer after Wednesday. I believe that they are just trying to strong arm the players into a deal because the players are starting to miss paychecks. Michael Jordan, the owner of the Charlette Bobcats seems to be starting to take control for the owners and kind of leading them against the players. I find this unusual because Michael Jordan is a former player so I would have thought that he would be more beneficial to the players and siding with them to help smooth this process over and get a deal done. Then again I guess Michael Jordan can never have enough money. Article+Video

Tebow Time No More

In Tim Tebow's first start of the year last week he was an atrocious 3-14 going into the 4th quarter down 15-0 to the winless Miami Dolphins. Once the 4th quarter rolled around it was Tebow time. He led his team to the first ever comeback down 15 points with under four minutes to go. Although his numbers were very subpar he was off the hook because he was lucky enough to lead his team to the victory. However, this week that was not the case. Tim Tebow started his second game just like the first game. Unfortunately, the Denver Broncos were not playing the Miami Dolphins this week. The Detroit Lions were in town and they put up a whopping 45 points on Tebow's Broncos. There was no 4th quarter comeback this time for Tebow. If it wasn't for one drive late in the game when it was well out of reach where Tebow gave his stats a little bit of a boost he would have put up dreadful numbers. This week there is no love lost for Tim Tebow. His naysayers have never been louder and his followers have never been more lost for words. The starting job is still his apparently, will just have to wait and see how long that last.

NFL Power Rankings: opinion review

For my post I went to bleacher report and looked at the most recent NFL power rankings. The guy who is in charge of these rankings had some questionable teams too high so I decided to comment with why I thought he was wrong. Here is my post:

I Think your reasoning behind having the Browns and the Redskins ahead of Cam Newton's Panthers is absurd in all aspects. The Redskins just lost to the Panthers and in that loss they also lost their number one running back and number one reciever. How they can overcome that with John Beck at QB baffles me. Plus, you believe the Browns who can't put up more than six points against the Seahawks have a chance of out scoring Cam Newton and he Panthers? Ill take the Panthers

Live Blog: Oregon vs. Arizona State

Going into this game, Arizona State was playing to keep there hopes of reaching the Pac-12 championship and a win over Oregon would almost guarantee they reach that game. On the other hand, Oregon is playing to keep pace with Stanford atop the Pac-12 North standings.

15:00- Game is about to kick off, the crowd at autzen stadium is really starting to get loud.

11:40- We have the first score of the game, Arizona State's Gerrald Robinson catches a 20yd pass from Osweiler to take a 7-0 lead over Oregon.

7:33- Oregon answers back with a Deanthony Thomas 16yd touchdown to tie the game up at 7-7.

4:10- Osweiler hits Mike Willie for a 25yd touchdown pass giving ASU a 14-7 lead. (Oregon crowd silent after touchdown)

End of 1st quarter- ASU 14 Oregon 7

12:07- Thomas hits Tuinei for a 28yd touchdown pass to tie the game up at 14.

12:07- Crowd is really making it noisy down on the field as ASU starts their drive.

7:52- Oregon holds ASU to a 37yd field  goal, giving ASU a 17-14 lead.

:27- Oregon sneaks one into the endzone before the half giving them a 21-17 lead.

End of 1st half- Oregon holds a slim lead 21-17

12:21- ASU starts out the second half with a solid drive with a Cameron Marshhall 4yd touchdown run. ASU now leads 24-21.

10:31- Oregon comes back with a quick strike as Thomas runs one in from three yards out. Oregon 28-24

8:01- After an Osweiler interception, Oregon puts seven more on the board after Barner runs one in. 35-24

7:40- Big third down for ASU, crowd noise is loudest it has been all night.

End of 3rd quarter-Oregon leads 35-24 and it looks as if they have this one in the bag.

14:40- Oregon adds to their lead with a 37yd field goal. ASU needs to put some points on the board if they want to stay in this one. 38-24

12:44- ASU gets some points with a 30yd field goal but they really needed a touchdown on that drive to keep it intersting. Good stop by Oregon defense. 38-27

9:26- Oregon kicks another field goal which gives them a 41-27 lead. Game is still in reach for ASU, however they are going to need their defense to get a stop here.

0:00- End of game, Oregon wins 41-27

Final Notes: Arizona State put up a good fight against Oregon's offense. However, it was just not enough as Daniel Thomas and Kenyan Barner ran all over Arizona State to keep them in a first place tie in the North standings with Stanford. Arizona State still holds their own destiny but it was a big loss for them tonight. Some final stats on game leaders.

Brock Osweiler- 280yds 2TD
Daniel Thomas- 187yds 2TD
Cameron Marshall- 97yds 1TD
Kenyan Barner- 171 1TD

Reviewing a Review: Saving Private Ryan

The movie that was being reviewed is Saving Private Ryan. The writer of this review gives good detail about what the movie is like and what to expect throughout the movie. The review gives you a good idea of how gruesome war can be. The reviewer uses the words "War is Hell" to describe how Steven Spielberg portrayed the movie. However, I don’t feel this review gives enough background information about the movie. He doesn’t summarize the movie besides that Capt. Miller (Tom Hanks) is leading his troops on a mission to find Private Ryan (Matt Damon.)

The point of view from this review is that the movie portrays war as hell. The reviewer does give plenty example of how that is portrayed throughout the movie. It is clear that the reviewer found this movie to be very enjoyable. In addition, I think he sways more towards giving his point of view rather than giving a better summary of the movie. He starts off with a strong point of view and sticks with it throughout his review.

Since I have seen this movie I thought that it was a good review because I understood everything he was talking about. On the other hand, if i had not seen Saving Private Ryan yet, I might find this review a little bit confusing. The Real Review

A Day in the Life of the Paparazzi

This story is about a journalist who follows around this guy Wagner, who is a paparazzi. Before reading this article my thoughts on the paparazzi were the same as most people's which is they are inconsiderate, rude, and don't let celebrities live a normal life. When in reality, the only reason these people have jobs is because we want the dirt and stories about celebrities. The paparazzi is only doing their job. They are just trying to make a living. Yes there are times when some go over the top and cross that line but in most cases the celebrities are not being bothered, they are just having multiple photographers snap their photo. The one question I have after reading this article is how much celebrities actually don't like the paparazzi because it seems like some might enjoy them taking their photos while they are out in public. Feature Story: Tiger Woods

This story features Tiger Woods and all the drama and chaos that has surrounded him since his infamous night on Thanksgiving in 2009. The article covers all the details from the night when he crashed his Cadillac Escalade into a tree just outside his drive around 2 in the morning. This all came about because Tiger’s wife Elin Nordergen discovered that Tiger had been cheating on her with another woman after she had read through Tiger’s text messages. The story revolves around Tiger Woods and how he has handled the press and all the negative attention that has come his way since it became known that he had been in the middle of an infidelity scandal. This feature comes across an investigative feature along with historical because there is much to this story that you can never do enough investigating to come across revelations that you had never heard about before. Plus it is historic in a sense because our country has probably never seen such a superstar in the middle of a controversy that the whole country is invested in. The conflict in the feature is how Tiger Woods had been hiding for years all these women he had been cheating on his wife with and yet it had been kept a secret for so long. In addition, the conflict rises dramatically once it became public that Tiger had cheated on his wife, more than a dozen women came out over the next couple of weeks saying that had slept with Tiger while he had been married to Elin. We are still waiting to see how this story resolves because in Tiger’s case it seems that he can’t get back to where he was before this scandal broke on and off the golf course. I believe the main theme from this article proves embarrassment on Tiger’s part, along with sadness and disappointment from the Tiger’s fans and the public audience. We haven’t seen an athlete fall so far from grace so fast. Most athletes who have faced a scandal or a large time off from what they do best, they all were able to come back. However, Tiger still seems far away from where he should be. The author of this feature doesn’t necessarily give his point of view or opinion he mostly just talks about how Tiger is trying to come back into golf after dealing with all this negativity publicity and how he has handled everything that has been thrown his way. This story really grabs my interest because I follow Tiger Woods with a passion. I love the man’s competitive spirit and how he dominates his sport for so long. The story of Tiger’s downfall upsets me because I wanted to see him break Jack Nicklaus record of 18 majors and become known as the world’s greatest golfer. There are so many questions that I still have that I assume I will never figure out an answer for because Tiger has made sure that the majority of the juiciness of what he did and how it all went down will never get out to the public. But I do hope Tiger is able to make his comeback in 2012 and regain his throne as the world’s best golfer again.

Francona Out

Just two days after suffering defeat and missing the playoffs the Boston Red Sox and manager Terry Francona decided to part ways. The red sox had a 9 game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays on September 3rd, and on Wednesday they suffered the largest blown lead in MLB history and missed the playoffs. Going into the season most baseball analyst had the red sox winning the World Series. They made two huge accusations in the off-season by signing Carl Crawford and trading for Adrian Gonzalez. Gonzalez for most of the season was putting up MVP type numbers. While on the other hand, Carl Crawford struggled the entire season and many red sox fans viewed him as an utter disappointment. The red sox did have their fair share of injuries. Their pitching staff was depleted by injuries and John Lackey’s inability to pitch two consistent games in a row all season. The red sox expectations at the beginning of the season were through the roof and when you don’t exceed those expectations you are going to see changes. The decision to let Francona go will not be the only change we see the red sox make this off-season. Full Story

Kobe Bryant Playing Overseas?

Apparently Kobe Bryant feels it is never necessary to rest. Especially since he is coming off his 33rd birthday. There have been reports circulating ever since the NBA season went into a lockout that Kobe would consider playing overseas. First, it started out that he might join fellow NBAer overseas and join a club team in Turkey. Now the reports are saying that he is considering playing in Italy. Even Kobe himself is saying that he sees it as "very possible" that he plays over in Italy while the lockout is intact. Kobe was born in Germany because his dad played for a German club team. To me this seems to be the only reason why Kobe would go back there is because he is semi familiar with the area. Will just have to wait and see.  Espn Story

Guest Speaker: Dylan Smith

Today in class we had a guest speaker from the Tucson Sentinel, Dylan Smith. Mr. Smith is the current Chief Editor and Publisher of the Newspaper which is based solely as an online resource. Mr. Smith and a few of his colleagues branched out once the Tucson Citizen went under and decided to run an online print only newspaper that focuses mainly on local Tucson news along with other major news stories. The Tucson Sentinel is a nonprofit online news source. The majority of the staff at the Sentinel does work voluntarily and carry a second job to pay for all their expenses. The Sentinel receives around fifty percent of their income from website advertisements along with around another fifty percent from donations that come from fellow readers of the Tucson Sentinel. A few interesting notes I took from Mr. Smith’s presentation; one was how since The Sentinel is a nonprofit news source they are not allowed to specifically endorse any political candidates. As Mr. Smith puts it “we want to give our readers everything straight up. We don’t want to lie to them like Fox news.” In addition, Mr. Smith talked about how his website was one of the first in the country to break the news that Gabrielle Gifford’s was in fact still alive and not dead after she was shot. He went on to discuss how crazy that first week was for him as a reporter and all the coverage that he had to attend whether it was a court hearing or a hospital visit. It was nonstop. NBA Lockout

NBA Lockout News
The NBA is currently in a lockout between the owners and the players union. All reports that I have been listening to and reading about have talked about how badly the owners and the NBA are doing in making sure a deal gets done before the regular season is suppose to start in late October.  The article discusses the main differences between the players union and the owners. It doesn’t look like this problem will be solved anytime soon and everyone is hoping to at least get a season in this year. Many players are already going overseas to play while the lockout goes on including perennial all-star Deron Williams. The NBA lockout is different than the NFL lockout because the NFL had so much more money at stake if they were to take their lockout into their regular season. On the other hand, the NBA’s revenue sharing is nothing compared to the NFL. Therefore, they have the ability to lockout the players into the season and try and use that as a bargaining chip because many NBA players need their paychecks to cover all of their reckless spending.

Week 1 of College Football

Here are the newly updated rankings after the opening week of college football. Rankings After one week in the books college football comes up on another exciting weekend in the world of college football. This coming weekend #1 Oklahome faces #5 Florida State in a matchup that could easily end someones national championship dreams. Last weekend LSU knocked off Oregon, bumping LSU over Alabama for the number two ranking while Oregon slid down the rankings. LSU's jump over Alabama was the only spot where there was reason for suprise. After this weekend the rankings should again jump around a good amount as there are a number of top 10 teams who face tough challenges ahead.

Opening Weekend in College Football

Tonight is opening night for College Football. Coaches, players, and fans have been waiting for this day to come since January 11th (day after the National Championship). Auburn is the defending national championship going into this season and yet there looks to be another SEC team lurking in the shadows waiting to dethrone the Tigers and that is their bitter rival the Crimson Tide of Alabama. Although Alabama lost their three main weapons on offense they return an NFL esque defensive along with heisman hopeful Trent Richardson at Running Back. The top two games of opening weekend consist of #3 Oregon playing #4 LSU in Cowboys Stadium. The other marquee game is Boise St. marching into Bulldog territory to face #19 Georgia, in the Georgia dome. As all four teams hope to keep their BCS dreams alive with a win, only Boise St. could ruin their chance at a BCS game with a loss on opening weekend. There doesn't seem to much upset alert for opening weekend as most teams start out playing FBS schools to ease their team into the season. One game to keep your eye on is the always dangerous Appalachian State against Virgnia Tech. My picks for these two games would be Oregon -3 and Georgia +3.5.
